WE HAVE HIRED THE ENTIRE CONVENT MEANING NO OTHER GUESTS WILL BE STAYING OVERNIGHT DURING OUR STAY

Established in 1686, at a time when it was illegal to be Catholic, a group of religious sisters, now known as the Congregation of Jesus, opened this secret convent. Today The Bar Convent is the UK's oldest, living convent. A living convent is defined as one with a continuously resident religious community. Sisters have lived on this site in the city of York for over three centuries.

During your time at the historic Convent you will have the opportunity to explore this beautiful building and spend time within it's secret chapel.

Obviously, given the deeply religious nature of the accommodation, we will not be conducting a paranormal investigation here...but fear not, we have plenty of supernatural delights in store!

York Castle has been a site of justice and incarceration for almost 1,000 years.

Its origins date back to 1068 when William the Conqueror built the first castle as a strategic stronghold to control the North of England.

The stronghold, rebuilt in the 13th century, has served various purposes, such as a Norman fortress, a royal palace, a court of justice, a royal mint, and an administrative centre for the county.

dick-turpin.jpg

Dick Turpin spent his last night in the cramped, dark, damp cells, deep in the bowels of the Felons' Prison, before being taken to the Knavesmire to be hung on 7th April 1739. What will we uncover as we investigate the cell where this infamous man had his final thoughts? Will you encounter his restless spirit or hear his final words and feel his fear as he awaited his doom?We will also try to connect with the ghosts of those who spent months in these cells awaiting their fate and those who perished behind the castle walls. The inmates of the Suffocation Cell, who died in a terrible way and the Yorkshire Witch, Mary Bateman among others.

There have been numerous reports of ghostly sightings within the Castle Prison. Doors slamming by unseen hands, babies crying, heavy footsteps, drastic temperature changes and screams are heard deep in the cells. Shadows are seen, pacing is heard walking the stone floors, staff have heard the sounds of women singing, chains rattling and eerie scratching noises coming from the cells.

Is this the hangman who is said to haunt these prison walls? Whispers are heard throughout the building, a small boy has been seen dressed in period clothing, who disappears round corners when he is seen and there have been reports of an elderly lady seated by a hearth... only to vanish!
