Accommodation
High above Whitby, and dominating the whole town, stands Whitby Abbey, the ruin of a once-great Benedictine monastery, founded in the 11th century. The medieval abbey stands on the site of a much earlier monastery, founded in 657 by an Anglian princess, Hild, who became its first abbess.
In 1890 Bram Stoker visited Whitby, and soon became entranced with the gothic beauty of these ruins...the seed was planted for the legend of Dracula.
Below the abbey stands the ancient parish church of St Mary, perched on East Cliff, which is reached by a climb of 199 steps. Stoker would have seen how time and the weather had gnawed at the graves, some of them teetering precariously on the eroding cliff edge. Some headstones stood over empty graves, marking seafaring occupants whose bodies had been lost on distant voyages. He noted down inscriptions and names for later use, including ‘Swales’, the name he used for Dracula’s first victim in Whitby.
Standing alongside the Abbey and St Marys Church, there is another imposing, historic building...Abbey House.
The Abbey House, was formerly the Manor House of Whitby and is positioned at the rear of St Marys church upon the East Cliff on the site of the former Abbots house. The oldest part of the mansion is the south side which was erected partly out of the ruins of the Monastery in 1580.
Sir Hugh Cholmley greatly enlarged and improved the building about the year 1635, when the eastern part was probably added.
Look out for the many original features around the building including a 13th century Viking beam and stunning victorian stained glass.
The building also boasts a Georgian Lounge, Games room, Conservatory, award winning 'Yorkshire in Bloom' gardens and breathtaking views across the town, harbour and out across the Yorkshire Moors.

Further Details - IMPORTANT PLEASE READ
The Whitby Abbey site is cared for and managed by English Heritage. Abbey House is currently operated by YHA however most rooms have their own private ensuite. Where this is not possible there are bathrooms on every floor. As this is a large historic building our group will not have exclusive use meaning much like a hotel break, there will be other customers in communal areas such as the lounge and bar.
As this is dorm style accommodation our guests will be required to share with other Eerie Escapes guests, up to a max of 8 per room. We have secured an entire floor to ourselves meaning only Eerie Escapes guests will be staying on our floor and using any shared bathrooms (most rooms have en-suites). At no time will other hostel guests be using our facilities. Our group will have private dining on both evenings.
All meals are included and menus will be issued before arrival. Specific dietary requirements will be catered for if guests are able to advise us in advance. Free WiFi is available downstairs.
Abbey House is situated next to Whitby Abbey and parking is available onsite on a first come first served basis. If there is no parking available onsite the closest car park is the main headland carpark https://www.scarborough.gov.uk/home/parking/car-parks/abbey-headland-car-park
Access to Whitby town is via the infamous 199 steps. Friday evenings Ghost Walk will involve taking these steps and there will be some degree of walking required throughout the weekend therefore this break may not be suitable for anyone with mobility issues. Please contact us if you're unsure.
* HMS Bark Endeavour Pirate Ship Experience will be weather and tide dependent. We cannot guarantee sailing will take place and do have an alternative activity planned should the weather be unkind.
Guests will need to make their own way to and from Whitby.
Deposits are non-refundable and non-transferable.
COVID-19 Guarantee
All HD Paranormal events and Eerie Escapes are covered by our money back guarantee meaning that if this event is cancelled due to COVID-19 all guests will receive a full refund.
