GHOSTS

There have been reports of poltergeist activity from both staff and guests alike, with many believing it stems from a brutal murder which took place in the hotel. Legend tells that a man named George was at the time the Landlord and he took a shine to one of the maids, a young girl named Elizabeth. He lured her down into the cellars where he planned to seduce her.

She declined his advances and threatened to tell his wife about his behaviour. With this, George stabbed her violently before hiding her body in an empty barrel, which sometimes later, he buried outside the hotel. Both the cellar and the area of land where she was buried remain today and the sounds of heavy boots walking up and down the cobbled cellar passageway between the 2 areas have been heard.

Stones and coins are also thrown in the cellar, and on one occasion a coin rolled down one end of the passageway, came rolling back of its own accord and stopped at the feet of the person who rolled it.

George is believed to be the cause of some of the more violent poltergeist activity in the hotel, with staff witnesses knives and plates being thrown from tables, glass smashing behind the bar and people being pushed on the stairs. He seems a nasty character in death as he was in life!

The ghost of Elizabeth also roams the hotel, especially it seems room 214 where strange light anomalies are often captured on camera and furniture has been known to move on its own.  A high level of paranormal activity is also reported in rooms 215 and 217 with guests fleeing in the middle of the night on some occasions!

In addition, there are believed to be the ghosts of 2 children present in the hotel. One, a little girl named Catherine, was tragically killed by a horse and cart outside.
