HISTORY OF THE MANOR

First built in the 12th century the Medieval Manor is one of the oldest lived in houses in Wales. Step back in time and experience 8 centuries of history surrounding you. In the 15th century a kitchen and large fireplace was added with at least 3 rooms added above for the monks. Each of these rooms had 4 small windows with prayer seats, a central fire, stair tower and garderobe. This addition is relatively unaltered from its original use, and today it can clearly be seen how it was intended for the monks use. King Henry VIII acquired the manor in 1536, when he also acquired a massive amount of lands, throughout England and Wales, at the time of the dissolution of the monasteries.

It passed through several families over the next 500 years until it became an abandoned ruin in the 1970s.

Local teenagers would meet inside, lighting fires in the large fireplaces and using Ouija boards. There are rumours that during this time a Satanic group began meeting in the ruined manor too, however we can find no evidence of this.

In 1978 it was saved from demolition when it was granted Grade II listed status.

You will also have the opportunity to sit at our antique Victorian Spirit Board in an attempt to make contact with the other side.

saturday

After a good nights sleep you will find a variety of breakfast options waiting for you including sausage baps (vegetarian also available), cereals, crumpets, toast, fruit, preserves, juices and tea & coffee.

Caerwent Roman Town

Caerwent, established in about AD 75–80, served as a settlement of the Silures, a native tribe who became Romanised following the conquest of Britain. It was a busy place complete with public baths, spread out in a typical well-ordered Roman grid. Impressive remains include walls still standing up to 17ft/5m, excavated houses, market-place and Romano-British temple.

"Something Hellish!"

Edmund Jones reported that in or around 1757, a man named David Griffiths, who was a carpenter by profession, was walking near the river when he heard a strange noise. He described it as being like “the braying of an ass”, but it resonated with “something “hellish”. Then he noticed something next to him - “he saw a dark roller, rolling by his side”, which then went through a hedge, tearing it apart as it did so. Such was the shock of the encounter; Griffiths spent the next two weeks in bed.

The Caldicott Castle Inn

After visiting Caerwent we will take a short stroll to this

300 year old pub for our lunch.

The Caldicott Castle Inn is also opposite an ancient former priory church that has its own interesting history summarised near the entrance and well worth a look.

After lunch you will have a few hours free time to either explore the local area or head back to the Manor house to rest and recharge ahead of the evenings investigation.

saturday evening

After your evening meal it will be time to begin the full paranormal investigation of Llanthony Secunda Manor, incorporating the latest high tech ghost hunting equipment. Last time we were at this location we experienced fascinating contact with a foreign speaking gentleman through the spirit boxes and an Estes experiment bought about heightened emotions for one guest. Upstairs our group all witnessed a pendulum swinging violently in an empty room and a Scottish character began communicating through an ITC application.

Will these spirits step forward once more?
