One of the most beautiful and historic places to stay in Glastonbury, The George & Pilgrims Hotel dates from 1475 and was built to serve the medieval Pilgrims visiting Glastonbury Abbey. Built on the ruins of an older inn, recorded in 1189 this location is brimming with history and echoes of the past and it is rumoured that King Henry VIII even stayed here during a visit to Glastonbury Abbey before the dissolution of the monasteries.
With it's sloping floors, large stone fireplaces, exposed beams and spiral staircases it doesn't take much imagination to transport yourself back almost 600 years to when it first opened its doors.
Originally known as 'The Pilgrims Inn' this is the oldest purpose built building in the South West. By the mid 1800s it was called The George Hotel before eventually the name was changed to combine the two. It is immediately eye catching on the High Street, not only because of it's age but it's incredibly striking frontage.
It is three storied with mullion windows and a front facing of paneled stone.
Above the arched front door are three carved panels bearing the coats of arms of Glastonbury Abbey and of
King Edward IV.
Inside the glorious original features continue and by candlelight the atmosphere can only be described as magical.
All 14 bedrooms retain original features with some of the 4-Poster bedrooms having large stone fireplaces and arched doorways.
OUR GROUP WILL HAVE SOLE OCCUPANCY OF THE HOTEL.
This hotel is infamous locally for it's high level of paranormal activity however it very rarely permits investigations!

In a town dubbed the 'Occult capital of England' ghosts and the supernatural are an accepted and frequent occurrence.
Nowhere moreso that The George and Pilgrims. The hotel boasts at least 25 resident ghosts whom they say simply refuse to leave!
In 2017 the hotel made headlines when a photograph taken by a customer appeared to show the infamous 'White Lady' believed to roam the building. The strange white mist, which some say appears to show a ghostly face, did not appear in the photo immediately before nor after, and so remains a mystery. When shown the photograph a member of staff said she wasn't at all surprised given that most of the reports of the white lady come from the exact area it was taken.
She, as well as others believe the woman who has been spotted many times through the years, fell in love with one of the abbey’s monks. It is well known that at one time a tunnel ran from the hotel to Glastonbury Abbey and it is believed that the two lovers used this tunnel for their assignations, until they were found out and the unfortunate monk, having betrayed his vows was walled up in the cellar and left to die.
DURING OUR STAY WE WILL CONDUCT A FULL PARANORMAL INVESTIGATION OF THE BUILDING INCLUDING THE CELLARS.
The Monk is referred to in a book called "The Haunted Pub Guide" by Guy Lyon Playfair (most famous for his involvement in the Enfield Poltergeist case) published in 1985.
" Early in the 1970s a woman guest described him in unusual detail, having seen him for what she reckoned to be ten to fifteen minutes……At one point the monk sat down on the guest’s bed, and she felt the sheets and blankets tighten over her as he did so. He was not alone; hovering in the background were two indistinct shapes that remained in a sort of vapour, as she told proprietor Jack Richardson soon after the event".
Another sighting comes from a Canadian couple, Mr and Mrs McCormack from Winnipeg who came to stay for one night.
After a pleasant evening they settled down in their separate single beds in Room 7. Mrs McCormack took some time to get to sleep, and when she did she dreamed a quite normal dream about her sisters back in Canada. Then she awoke suddenly on hearing three footsteps, and looked up to see ‘a bright, arched, glimmering light’ at the end of her husband’s bed. Out of this light there emerged a man. He was tall, slender, and ‘grinning at me' she explained. He was wearing a blue sports coat, ‘the kind worn by elderly Englishmen on Sunday picnics’, and he remained visible, grinning all the while and still surrounded by the halo of light — long enough to make Mrs McCormack leap out of bed and wake her husband. As soon as he awoke, however, the ghost disappeared.
DURING OUR INVESTIGATION WE WILL BE CONDUCTING EXPERIMENTS AND VIGILS IN ROOM 7 ALONG WITH OTHER ROOMS.
From arguments heard in the function room when no-one is around, to footsteps, rattling chains, scratching sounds and the strong smell of a cigar which comes and goes instantly, the George & Pilgrims Hotel is a MUST SEE place for any paranormal enthusiast.
We have details of the most haunted bedrooms and on request, for any guests brave enough we will allocate you these rooms...YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
stone steps leading to the cellars
On Saturday morning we will visit the 7th century Glastonbury Abbey, burial place of King Arthur and his Queen.
Glastonbury Abbey is connected with legend to a degree that is unparalleled by any other abbey in England. Since Medieval times it has held legendary status as the earliest Christian foundation in Britain linked to Joseph of Arimathea, the man who assumed responsibility for the burial of Jesus Christ following the crucifixion.
WITH SUGGESTED CONNECTIONS TO THE HOLY GRAIL AND THE LEGEND OF CAMELOT, THIS IS A TRULY UNIQUE AND MAGICAL PLACE.
As we explore you will hear all about the 'Ghosts of the Abbey' including a very unusual and terrifying spectre indeed believed to have started appearing after King Arthurs death.
After the tour we will go to Abbey House, a stunning 19th century country house in the grounds of the Abbey for a private buffet lunch with hot drinks.
During our weekend break the annual Glastonbury Medieval Fayre will be at the Abbey. You may wish to spend a couple of hours browsing the many stalls, watching the birds of prey or jousting competitions.
(additional entry fee applies payable to the Abbey)
Of course you may wish to remain with us for our next location...
White Springs Temple
It is one of the greatest mysteries of the Isle of Avalon that two different healing springs, one touched red with iron, the other white with calcite, should rise within a few feet of each other from the caverns beneath Glastonbury Tor. Both are believed to have healing in their flow.
In honour of the Spirit of the White Spring, a Temple has been created in gratitude for the gift of pure water. A Victorian built Well House that nestles beneath Glastonbury Tor was ideal for this purpose.
Cavernous and set apart, in blackness or candle lit, mysterious it remains. The interior consists of three domed vaults 16ft high, with beautiful bowed floors - like the hull of a boat moored at the portal to the Otherworld. With it's constant temperature, and the sound of the perpetually flowing water, it is a unique and sacred space.
Simple shrines stand in honour of the ancient energies and spirits of Avalon have been created within the temple. All enhanced by the ley line known as the Michael line which flows through this place.
OUR GROUP HAVE A PRIVATE VISIT ARRANGED.
THE USE OF CAMERAS, MOBILE PHONES AND ANY ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED TO PROTECT THE VERY SPECIAL ATMOSPHERE.
Glastonbury Tor - "the doorway to the Other-world"
A 15 minute walk from the temple we find ourselves at what has been believed to be 'the Doorway to the Otherworld' for centuries, Glastonbury Tor.
Rising to over 500 feet the Tor is visible from miles around. This is even more pronounced given that the top is surmounted by the tower of the church of St Michael, the remains of an early medieval church probably built on an earlier pagan site.
Joseph of Arimathea is also reputed to have buried the Holy Grail near here, some believe at the base of the Tor itself.
Centuries of legends and folklore have gathered around this Tor.
In their various ways, these tales all demonstrate one thing –
the Tor is a place where the veil between the worlds is thin.
Over the centuries there have been countless reports of a supernatural nature involving everything from Fairy portals and time slips, to the ghosts of the tower itself.
Some people believe that the Tor is a portal to another realm with reports of "vanishing people" who are seen walking towards the Tor but are never seen returning.
The most powerful ley lines are believed to pass through the Tor making it an incredibly sacred and magical place indeed.
As the walk is steep in parts, any guests who are not able, or would rather not join us are free to explore Glastonburys many eclectic shops instead!
