ABOUT OUR VENUE
Our home for the weekend is a classic country house nestled within 30 acres of private grounds
with forest, fields, its own stone circle and much more.
The house sits high above the town of Mitcheldean, deep in the heart of the Forest of Dean and commands spectacular views over the River Severn to the Cotswolds and the Malvern Hills over 20 miles away.
The estate can be traced back at least 2000 years and was originally an Iron Age settlement.
The first house on this land was built in the 16th century with the present house replacing it in 1824. Once a private home the building became a Women's Sanatorium in 1884 before becoming an isolation hospital for children with Diphtheria and Scarlett fever. Finally the building was used as a geriatric hospital until it closed its doors in 1965.
Now known as The Wilderness Centre, the estate offers the opportunity to roam freely throughout private woodlands, fields and hills.
As a former hospital, the building has seen many deaths including tragically, children. Over the years staff and visitors alike have reported a range of strange phenomena including disembodied footsteps, children giggling, doors opening and closing and most frequently, a woman with dark hair who walks up the driveway and through the front door before disappearing! In the woodlands there is a small building known as 'The Chapel' This was actually used as the hospital mortuary, and wandering spirits have often been seen leaving through the doorway before disappearing into the dense forest! Occasionally visitors have also seen a small light flickering in the window, like a candle, as would have been the case when bodies were laid out in there...however the building is now disused.
The Forest of Dean is notorious for it's magic and folklore, having been plagued by witchcraft and some say the dark arts until the 1900's. Many local residents would at that time carry hazel tags with them, or hang them outside their doors...so afraid were they of the cunning folk!
Mitcheldean itself has a history of riots, murders and hangings, and the local area was the home of the last woman in Gloucestershire to be charged with being a Witch, Ellen Hayward. Ellen would treat people using potions and herbs gathered from the surrounding forest under a full moon.
The Forest of Dean is arguably the richest place in Britain for myths and legends. From hidden roman temples to strange runic inscriptions and sightings of a strange bearlike figure there is many an unusual discovery to be made here.
But what makes this area particularly curious are the sheer number of encounters with the Devil himself reported over the last few hundred years. Many eye witnesses claim to have seen the hoofed figure, sometimes standing, at other times on horseback being followed by legions of riders, charging silently through the forest in the dead of night.
There are also claims from locals, of covens of spectral witches roaming freely...dare you enter the woods alone at night?
